Looking to make it a grandstand finish to the season, Burnley FC Women host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon – 23rd April – at the Anchor Ground, Darwen in a crucial clash at the top of the FA Women’s National League North table.
As it stands, Jay Bradford’s side sit 2nd, two points behind leaders Nottingham Forest. Wolves meanwhile sit 3rd, a point below Burnley and three below Forest.
Sunday’s game however provides a game in hand for both the Clarets and the Wanderers having initially been postponed last month, with Forest not in league action.
If Burnley are able to pick up all three points, they’d go top of the table ahead of a final day showdown with Liverpool Feds at Turf Moor. A win for Wolves meanwhile would take them 2nd, with their goal difference – at the moment – 20 worse off than the table toppers. Please note that the Clarets’ usual home venue of the County Ground is unavailable, hence why this weekend’s fixture will now take place in Darwen. Entry will remain free to all supporters.
As announced earlier this week, Wolves’ visit also provides a second ‘Pledgeball’ fixture of the campaign for the Claret Women, which means you have the opportunity to win a signed shirt! Pledgeball work alongside football clubs to give fans the opportunity to join the fight of sustainability, and with each simple pledge made HERE, you’ll also be helping Burnley FC Women to rise up the Pledgeball league table. Back to matters on the pitch, and Bradford’s side head into Sunday on the back of a 2-1 win away at The Hawthorns last weekend where West Bromwich Albion were the beaten hosts.
Lizzie Hamer gave Burnley an early lead in the Midlands which was quickly cancelled out by Baggies forward Kerry Walklett. And in a tense second half, Laura Elford’s stunning volley made the difference to earn all three points as she hammered home Leah Embley’s cross to the back post.
That was a 15th league win of the campaign for the Claret Women, who to date have only lost one of 20 matches in the division this season. Elford’s goal against the Baggies was also the 100th netted by the side this term in all competitions, a remarkable tally achieved in just 30 games.
Three of those 100 were netted in the reverse fixture against Sunday’s opponents back in October as Bradford’s side picked up a 3-1 victory on the road. Ella Kinzett was on target against the Wanderers that afternoon, with Evie Priestley netting a brace.
Since then, Dan McNamara’s Wolves – who won the league title last season but went on to lose the promotion play-off final to Southampton – have lost only once more in the league.
That defeat came against AFC Fylde in March, with a handful of points dropped elsewhere in draws including last weekend at home against Derby County, with neither side able to find the back of the net.
As 2nd & 3rd face off this Sunday, make sure you’re there at the Anchor Ground (BB3 0BB) to show your support for the Clarets!
