Clarets fall to defeat on the road

An action-packed first half did the damage as Burnley Women were beaten 3-1 at Rugby Borough on Sunday afternoon.

Jade Richards was on target for the second game running, but the hosts were too strong and claimed all three Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League points.

There were three changes to the side that started against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out, with Interim Head Coach Louise Roberts keeping the same defence.

A tweak to the midfield saw Amelia Hazard return from the off, while Heidi Logan and Charley Docherty took the two wide positions either side of striker Claudia Walker.

In a steady start at the Nationwide Windows Arena both teams had a shot at goal in the opening 10 minutes, but both went narrowly wide.

Rugby’s Yasmin Mosby was first to take aim but her half volley from the edge of the area was too high, before Walker nodded Tilly Wilkes’ cross narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

The deadlock was broken just before the half hour when, after Richards tripped Angelina Nixon in the area, Mosby picked out the bottom left corner from 12 yards.

Docherty almost hit back immediately but saw her close-range effort cannon back off the post. However, the equaliser did come with 43 on the clock.

It was centre-back Richards who was on target, finishing smartly after Naomi Hartley headed a deep corner back into the danger zone.

The hosts then took control of the match with two goals in three minutes at the end of the first half, the first coming from Mosby after Mai Moncaster got the first touch on a corner.

Another set piece caused chaos in the second minute of stoppage time and, after a game of head tennis, Rugby captain Katy Morris was able to finish from close range.

The Clarets kept the ball well after the break but Roberts didn’t leave it long before turning to her bench, introducing Louise McDaniel and Danielle Maxwell for Louanne Worsey and Walker.

Burnley huffed and puffed without creating too many clear-cut openings, and Aimee Kelly was next to enter the fray with less than 20 minutes to play.

Emma Siddall’s powerful effort from the edge of the area tested Anna Pedersen in the Rugby goal before Kelly hooked an effort narrowly over.

However, the hosts took any sting out of the game in the last 10 minutes or so with multiple substitutions and despite their best efforts, Roberts’ side were unable to prevent a sixth league defeat of the campaign.

After 20 matches we sit 5th in the table with 40 points. Next up is the visit of Halifax to the Daisy Communications Arena in Nelson on Wednesday 16th April.
