Burnley’s FA Women’s National League Cup journey came to an end at the semi-final stage courtesy of a 4-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle on Sunday afternoon.

Millie Ravening opened the scoring with a fantastic 55-yard first-half strike, but the Pilgrims fought back and Tianna Teisar netted a brace to help her team to victory.

Lou Roberts named the same starting XI for a seventh match running, with the only change to the squad seeing Aimee Kelly come onto the bench for Naomi Hartley.

Our FAWNL Cup top scorer Charlie Chadwick led the line alongside Claudia Mummery-Walker, with Ravening playing just behind them in the ‘10’ role.

After a quiet start the first chance of note came in the 10th minute. Thea Paul swung a free-kick into the box from the left touchline, but Jade Richards could only steer her header wide of the target.

Ravening then broke the deadlock with an audacious effort into the top left corner, which Argyle ‘keeper Hermione Cull was unable to get strong enough of a hand to.

The hosts grew into the game as the first half progressed, but their only chance of note saw a defender block Tamara Wilcock’s shot behind for a corner.

That was until the first minute of stoppage-time, when hesitation in the Clarets back line allowed Teisar to poke home from six yards.

Argyle took the lead five minutes after the restart as Phoebie Poole scored from the penalty spot after Charley Docherty was adjudged to have fouled in the area.

The home team had the wind in their sails at that point and thought they’d made it three straight afterwards, but Teisar’s close-range effort was ruled offside.

Burnley took some time to re-group and Jasmine Matthews threatened the Plymouth goal twice, hitting a post before heading narrowly wide of the target.

Yana Daniëls was sin binned for dissent in the 67th minute and the player advantage was made to count two minutes later as Teisar reacted quickest to a loose ball to tap in.

Roberts turned to her bench for the first time, replacing Docherty and Chadwick with Danielle Maxwell and Heidi respectively.

Siddall, Chandarana and Daniëls later made way for Brenna McPartlan, Aimee Kelly and Louise McDaniel as the Clarets pushed in search of a route back into the game.

Matthews was also sin binned in stoppage time, though, and Poole scored her second and Plymouth’s fourth of the day in the 94th minute to spark jubilant celebrations.

Burnley now turn their attention to the league, with a trip to Loughborough Lightning up next on Sunday 8th February.
