Reanna Blades’ first Burnley goal earned the Clarets an important one all draw with Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon.
The winger came off the substitutes bench to strike 10 minutes from time and cancel out Mel Johnson’s first-half strike at a wet City Ground.
Rebecca Sawiuk made two changes to the starting XI following last weekend’s defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Georgia Marshall starting at centre-back and Claudia Walker coming in to lead the line.
It was Burnley who created the first opening of note, with Jade Richards heading onto the roof of the net after six minutes.
Forest looked to attack at every opportunity and Charlie Wellings missed two presentable chances before the hosts broke the deadlock just after the half hour.
Forward Mel Johnson was played through by Sophie Domingo and gave Clarets ‘keeper Kirstie Levell no chance, picking out the bottom right corner.
Burnley remained resolute and our best chance of the first half fell to Claudia Walker, but the striker’s volley was straight at Emily Batty.
The second half started with Forest on the front foot and Levell produced fine saves to deny Johnson and Domingo in a five-minute spell.
Sawiuk started to look to her bench shortly afterwards in the form of Naomi Hartley and Charley Docherty and the Clarets continued to battle hard in the tricky conditions.
The attacking legs of Rhema Lord-Mears, Blades and Aimee Kelly also entered the fray later and those changes paid off with 80 on the clock.
Brenna McPartlan intercepted the ball before playing a beautifully disguised pass through to Blades, who finished coolly past the on rushing Batty.
Lord-Mears came agonisingly close to grabbing a late winner when she smashed the ball off the bar from 25 yards, but the game finished all square.
The result leaves Burnley 4th in the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League table but, importantly, just three points adrift of league leaders Forest.
Next up is the visit of West Bromwich Albion to Turf Moor on Sunday 22nd September, which kicks off at 2pm.
