Burnley Women bounced back to winning ways as six players found the net in an emphatic 7-0 victory at Loughborough Lightning on Sunday afternoon.

Aimee Kelly’s brace was accompanied by further strikes from Jasmine Matthews, Brooke Cairns, Claudia Mummery-Walker, Jade Richards, and Millie Ravening in the Midlands.

There were three changes to the side that started last week’s FAWNL Cup semi-final at Plymouth Argyle, with Brenna McPartlan coming in for her first start since October.

Cairns and Kelly were given starting berths in similar circumstances, with Emma Siddall and Millie Chandarana rotating to the bench.

The Clarets were on the front foot right from the off as Ravening had an overhead kick saved and another effort hit a post before the deadlock was broken in the 15th minute.

Charley Docherty’s deep free-kick was headed back into the mix by Ravening, and Matthews was on hand to net her first Burnley goal from close range.

It was 2-0 eight minutes later when Yana Daniëls teed up Cairns to strike first time from the edge of the area, and the midfielder’s effort found its way in via the cross bar.

Burnley’s superiority showed throughout in truth and after several near misses, Kelly extended the lead on the stroke of half-time.

The striker did well to control Docherty’s cross and pick out the top right corner for her 10th goal of the campaign.

It took the number 25 just seven minutes after the restart to double her tally, picking out the top left corner from 22 yards.

Two further goals in eight minutes then made it 6-0. The first came from Mummery-Walker on her 50th Clarets appearance, before Richards converted a Docherty corner from close range.

Ashley Vickers turned to his bench in the celebrations, replacing McPartlan, Matthews and Thea Paul with Chandarana, Siddall and Tilly Wilkes respectively.

Our final goal came with 69 on the clock as Ravening controlled a dropping ball and expertly picked out the bottom left corner from the edge of the area.

Two more substitutions saw Mummery-Walker and Daniëls make way for Heidi and Danielle Maxwell and the Clarets were unrelenting in their search for further boosts to their goal difference.

It wasn’t to come, though, and the 7-0 scoreline is the eighth time the team have scored five or more goals in a match in all competitions this season.

After 14 matches the team have 38 points. That’s four more than second-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have two games in hand.
