Late drama saw Burnley FC Women claim victory on a rainy night in Merseyside midweek.
A Brenna McPartlan goal in stoppage time left the visitors jubilant after a tight contest that saw three goals and a sending off!
Rebecca Sawiuk made three changes from the side that beat West Bromwich Albion Women at Turf Moor last Sunday, with Charlie Docherty, Bella Reidford and Claudia Walker all back in the starting XI. 17-year-old centre-back Maddie Oliver was also named on the bench having signed for the Club on a dual registration from Manchester City last weekend.
The two sides entered the game level on points in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women's National League, so it was all to play for under the lights at Jericho Lane.
Anna Grey started brightly on the wing as she looked to test the Feds defence early on, but it was centre-back Georgia Marshall who opened the scoring heading home from a Tilly Wilkes corner. Her first goal of the campaign setting the Clarets off to the perfect start less than 15 minutes in.
Claudia Walker very almost made it two when Charley Docherty's cross caused the home side problems, she found Walker who slid in, but the opposition scrambled the ball away from danger.
Anna Grey was the first name in the book as she picked up a yellow card for a foul on Mayzee Davies.
Liverpool Feds were tenacious as they looked for an equaliser, but the visitors stayed disciplined limiting their chances as the half progressed.
A Mia Parry cross did put some pressure on the Clarets, but Kirstie Levell palmed it behind and the resulting corner was blocked.
Rachael Norney was quick out of her goal minutes before the whistle blew for half-time coming out to meet the oncoming Walker before the striker could get her shot away.
As the referee blew, the Clarets took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Eight minutes into the second half, it was former Claret Courtney Willis who set up the Liverpool Feds leveller, sending a cross into the box which was met by Ellie Fletcher who headed the ball past Levell.
The Clarets were the first to make any changes, a double substitution which saw Grey and Walker make way for Aimee Kelly and Laura Elford. Then five minutes later a third change was made, with Amelia Hazard introduced for Rhema Lord-Mears.
The second booking of the game went Davies' way for a foul on Kelly.
There were more changes for the visitors Reanna Blades replaced Docherty. Before the hosts made a switch with Aleesha Collins coming on for Olivia Francis up front.
Burnley very nearly grabbed a second following some positive play out wide, the ball fell to Elford in a promising position, however her effort travelled over the crossbar.
The subs continued to come thick and fast, with Evie Smith introduced for Maisie Davies in another move from the hosts.
Levell won rapturous applause from the crowd for a fantastic diving save from a Parry shot, with the keeper very much keeping her side in the game with just over ten minutes of the 90 to go.
In the final change for the Clarets Bella Reidford was withdrawn for Grace Palmer as the visitors pushed to find a winner for the final six minutes plus added time. For the home side Willis made way for Emily Cole.
A free-kick in a dangerous area for Burnley saw Wilkes take but Naomi Hartley couldn't angle the header goalward.
There was late drama, as a long ball over the top gave Collins an opportunity at goal. Hartley was shown a red card by the referee for a last ditch tackle on the forward on the edge of the box leaving the Clarets to see out the final few minutes with ten.
Elford and Parry both found themselves in the book before the late drama continued when Palmer fizzed the ball into the box and McPartlan got the final touch in what could be a crucial goal come the end of the season.
It was the goal which was the last kick of the game as the Clarets celebrated a hard earned three points!
