Burnley Women beat Hull City 1-0 on Sunday afternoon to progress to the last eight of the FA Women’s National League Cup.
Naomi Hartley’s second-half header was the difference between the two teams in Yorkshire as the Clarets recorded a sixth straight victory and third consecutive clean sheet.
There were four changes to the team that started the Clarets' last outing against Derby County two weeks ago, with Hartley stepping into the heart of the defence.
Two midfield switches saw Bella Reidford and Grace Palmer take the places of Brenna McPartlan and Rhema Lord-Mears, and Claudia Walker lead the line.
Burnley started on the front foot and almost took the lead within three minutes, but Amelia Hazard’s close-range effort from a corner was just wide.
The efforts on goal kept coming as Emma Siddall shot straight at Hull ‘keeper Abi Wallace and Charley Docherty headed over after good work from Palmer.
Heavy wind and rain tested the players during the first half but the Clarets were determined to play their attacking brand of football and continued to probe for the right opportunities.
The hosts had their best chance of the half 11 minutes before its conclusion but Hope Knight’s effort from range didn’t have the power needed to beat Kirstie Levell.
Just as they did in the first half Burnley started quickly after the break, with Walker having an effort blocked off the line and the Hull ‘keeper smothering Palmer at her feet before the 53rd minute.
With the sun now firmly out at the Easy Buy Arena head coach Rebecca Sawiuk then looked to her bench for the first time, bringing on Northern Ireland international McPartlan for Hazard.
The Clarets’ hard work eventually paid off just before the hour when Hartley rose highest to head a Palmer free-kick in off a post and break the deadlock.
That was Palmer’s last involvement as she was replaced by Lord-Mears straight away, and Sawiuk introduced Reanna Blades for Docherty at the same time.
With the game now stagnating slightly Burnley made two more changes in search of a spark, with top scorer Elford replacing Walker before Heidi Logan came on for her first minutes in six weeks.
Elford might have thought she’d found a second goal 10 minutes from the end, but Wallace produced a flying save to her left to keep the Tigresses in it.
Hull came close to finding an equaliser as the match entered stoppage time, but Ellie Tanser’s header flashed the wrong side of the post from their point of view.
Having already beaten AFC Fylde and Sutton Coldfield Town in this competition, Burnley will learn their quarter final opponents on Monday evening.
Next up is the visit of Rugby Borough in the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League, which kicks off at 2pm on Sunday 27th October.
