Clarets end season with emphatic victory

Burnley Women finished their 2024/25 season on a high with a well-deserved 7-0 victory over Sporting Khalsa on Sunday afternoon.

Seven different players found the net as the Clarets produced a dominant display in front of a healthy crowd at Turf Moor.

There were two changes to the side that beat Halifax by the same scoreline last week, with club captain Jade Richards replacing Georgia Marshall at centre-back.

Amelia Hazard took the place of Rhema Lord-Mears in midfield, with Louise McDaniel and Danielle Maxwell both making their first appearances at Turf Moor.

Sporting Khalsa were first to get a shot away when Annia Denham hooked the ball over from the edge of the area, but Burnley opened the scoring in the 10th minute.

The Clarets have looked dangerous from set pieces all season and when Tilly Wilkes floated a corner to the back post, Richards was able to head powerfully past Elise Stocking.

McDaniel put an effort just the wrong side of the post straight afterwards but it was 2-0 with 16 on the clock through Heidi Logan, who latched onto Brenna McPartlan’s through ball to finish well.

At this point Louise Roberts’ side were well on top, with Logan forcing another save and Charley Docherty miskicking a presentable chance.

The visitors had the better of the final 10 minutes of the first half but were unable to work Kirstie Levell, with Layla Kennerley and Tiana Russell-Cartwright both shooting well wide.

Burnley came out of the blocks firing after the break, managing three chances in the first five minutes.

After McDaniel and Docherty were both denied by Stocking the former put the ball in the net from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Roberts turned to her bench for the first time shortly before the hour mark, replacing Docherty with Aimee Kelly in a move that moved Logan out to the left wing.

Kelly provided the assist for our third of the afternoon, teeing up Hazard to strike sweetly into the top right corner from 25 yards.

Brenna McPartlan then reached double figures for the season with a penalty into the bottom right corner after Kelly was fouled.

The action picked up in the final 15 minutes or so and Maxwell marked her debut Turf Moor outing with a lovely finish from Hazard’s pinpoint pass in the 79th minute.

Elford then played an excellent one-two with Kelly that allowed the latter to net the team’s six of the afternoon as the clock hit 90.

The scoring wasn’t done there, though, as McPartlan lofted a fine pass through to Walker to touch and finish beyond Stocking.

After today’s result Burnley finish the season 4th in the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League table with 46 points from 22 matches.
