A Laura Elford hat-trick helped Burnley Women to a 7-0 victory over AFC Fylde on Wednesday evening that secures their place in this season’s FA Women’s National League Cup competition.
Five first-half goals set up a comfortable evening at Nelson FC’s Daisy Communications Arena, with another two after the break putting the cherry on top.
There were seven changes to the team that started Sunday’s league victory over Stourbridge, with Naoisha McAloon and Jade Richards coming in for their Burnley debuts.
Tilly Wilkes was introduced to the defence, with Rhema Lord-Mears and Bella Reidford starting in midfield and Aimee Kelly and Elford joining the forward line.
Elford latched onto a precise Charley Docherty cut back to open the scoring after eight minutes and it was two 11 minutes later, with the latter setting up Reidford to slot home.
Burnley then scored three times in a blistering six-minute spell to take the game away from the visitors.
First up was Kelly, who reacted quickest to a loose ball to tap in before Elford netted in similar fashion after a goalkeeping error.
Having played fantastically Docherty was able to get herself on the scoresheet before halftime, cutting in from the right and picking out the top corner with power.
Rebecca Sawiuk’s side continued their dominance after the break as Elford netted her third with a fine curling effort from the edge of the box.
The seventh and final goal of the night came in the 51st minute when Lord-Mears finished well from an Emma Siddall cross.
Burnley were comfortable for the remaining 40 minutes or so, with Sawiuk introducing Claudia Walker, Reanna Blades, Anna Grey and Amelia Hazard for valuable minutes.
The Clarets have now won their opening three games of the 2024/25 season in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and conceding once.
Next up is a trip to Stoke City in the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League on Sunday 1st September. Kick-off at the Potters’ Clayton Wood Training Ground is 2pm.
