Chadwick hat-trick earns FAWNL Cup progression

Burnley progressed to the last 16 of the FA Women’s National League Cup with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Norton & Stockton Ancients on Sunday afternoon.

Charlie Chadwick scored her second hat-trick in as many matches in this competition, with further goals coming from Millie Chandarana, Helen Seed and Emma Siddall at the Daisy Arena in Nelson.

There were four changes from the side that beat Blackburn Rovers in our final group stage match of this competition, with Naoisha McAloon making her first appearance of the season in goal.

Jasmine Matthews and Danielle Maxwell stepped into defence, fulfilling centre-back and right wing-back roles respectively, while Heidi led the line alongside Chadwick.

It took just eight minutes for the Clarets to break the deadlock and it was Chadwick who was on target, heading Matthews’ cross into the bottom left corner expertly.

Norton restored parity soon afterwards through Louise Atkinson, who latched onto Bianca Owens’ perfectly weighted ball over the top to finish low.

Burnley didn’t let their heads drop, though, and Chandarana made it 2-1 with a fantastic overhead kick from Maddie Robinson’s corner with 19 on the clock.

Lou Roberts’ side had the better of the possession and after a couple of near misses, Chadwick scored her second and the team’s third five minutes before the break.

Having been fed the ball on the right hand side, the striker cut inside, jinked past a defender and found the net with the help of Norton ‘keeper Kelsie Moore’s palms.

Robinson was forced off through injury in the aftermath of the goal, with Thea Paul taking her place at left wing-back.

Seed then replaced Matthews in a planned change at half-time and Chadwick thought she’d completed her hat-trick soon afterwards – but her close-range effort was ruled offside.

The Clarets continued to dominate the ball and Seed’s first ever Burnley goal, which came through a thumping finish, made it 4-0.

Roberts made a triple change in the 75th minute, replacing Heidi, Jade Richards and Brooke Cairns with Aimee Kelly, Siddall, and Millie Ravening respectively.

Chadwick did eventually net her third with eight minutes of regular time to play, when she was presented a simple close-range finish by Paul’s industry down the left.

The scoring wasn’t done there though, and defender Siddall produced a strike any attacker would be proud of as the clock hit 90, beating the ‘keeper all ends up from 25 yards.

Roberts and co will learn their last 16 opponents in Monday night’s FAWNL Cup draw, which takes place at 7.15pm.

They are next in action two days later, when they travel to the Alexander Stadium to battle West Bromwich Albion for three league points at 7.45pm.
