Burnley Women fought through the tricky storm Kathleen conditions to earn a deserved 3-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at the Anchor Ground on Sunday afternoon.
Goals from Thea Paul, Monique Robinson and Laura Elford saw the Clarets record a fourth straight win and extend their unbeaten run to six matches.
There were four changes from Wednesday’s emphatic 9-0 victory over AFC Fylde, with Kirstie Levell recovering from a knock to keep goal.
Club captain Thea Paul and Georgia Marshall returned to the defence, with Tilly Wilkes starting on the left too.
Burnley were forced into a 14th-minute change with Robinson replacing the injured Rhema Lord-Mears, but that didn’t seem to affect their early rhythm in the wind and rain in Darwen.
The opening goal came in the 22nd minute, when a corner was cleared to Paul who unleashed a powerful effort into the top left corner from 22 yards for her second goal in as many games.
Huddersfield then hit back immediately with their first attack of note. Another corner resulted in pinball in the Burnley box and after a fine save from Levell, Rebecca Beresford was on hand to equalise.
In an action-packed first half Burnley restored their lead on the half hour.
A quick counter attack saw them break forward and after an Elford effort was saved, Robinson controlled and calmy slotted her first goal for the Club.
Burnley controlled possession for the rest of the first half and made it 3-1 within a minute of the restart.
After defender Scarlett McMahon misjudged a bouncing ball on halfway former Terrier Elford pounced, eventually rounding Hazelton and scoring her seventh goal in four games.
The game then became end-to-end with Levell producing a strong save to deny Ashley Tiripke before Burnley’s Lizzy Hamer’s goal bound volley was blocked.
Head Coach Rebecca Sawiuk then started to shuffle her pack, with Leah Embley and Aimee Kelly coming on for Bella Reidford and Elford.
The two substitutes combined shortly after, with Embley steering wide after Kelly had flicked the ball into her path.
Huddersfield continued their search for a way back into the game and Levell pulled off another flying save to her right three minutes from time, but the Clarets were able to keep them at bay.
After their 18th Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League match of the season, Burnley sit 2nd with 42 points. The gap to 3rd-placed Nottingham Forest stays at one point.
