Burnley Women resumed their league campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Hull City Ladies on Sunday afternoon.

Yana Daniëls’ close-range finish and an own goal gave the Clarets a two-goal lead at the break, before Charley Docherty added extra gloss on the scoreline at the very start of the second half.

Lou Roberts reverted to the side that started the team’s last league match at Sporting Khalsa, with Kirstie Levell in goal and Tilly Wilkes wearing the captain’s armband.

The only change to the bench saw Aimee Kelly replace Heidi Logan, following her cup brace against Blackburn Rovers last weekend.

Burnley started on the front foot and broke the deadlock with just eight minutes on the clock.

After Daniëls’ shot made Hull ‘keeper Abi Wallace turn the ball around the post for a corner, the Belgian pounced on indecision from the set piece to finish into the bottom right corner.

The Clarets were enjoying much of the ball but gifted their opponents a sight at goal after 25 minutes, with Hope Knight unable to keep her effort down.

Mel Lawley looked to take aim whenever possible, and several crosses flashed across the face of goal as Roberts’ team seemed intent on doubling their lead.

The second goal did eventually come seven minutes before half-time, when Kirstie Hunt headed Wilkes' cross into her own net.

Roberts’ half-time team talk had the desired effect when Daniëls crossed for Docherty to tap in at the back post roughly 90 seconds after the restart.

There was less positive news, though, when Brenna McPartlan went down and was replaced by Abbey-Leigh Stringer with 53 on the clock.

Lawley almost made it 4-0 from Walker’s inch-perfect cut back but was denied by a smart save from Wallace in the bottom right corner.

Burnley’s second change saw Naomi Hartley replace Jade Richards, and a triple switch later meant Lawley, Daniëls and Wilkes made way for Kelly, Millie Chandarana and Thea Paul respectively.

Kelly had an immediate impact. After being denied one-on-one, the striker curled another effort into Wallace’s hands just three minutes after coming on.

The remaining minutes passed without much incident of note until the clock hit 90. It was Kelly who was involved again, but the substitute’s powerful effort was tipped onto the bar.

Burnley now have 13 points from their five league matches to date and are up to 2nd in the table on goal difference.

Next up is a trip to Halifax’s Myra Shay Stadium in Bradford on Sunday 12th October.
