Burnley Women’s five-match winning streak came to an end at the hands of Stoke City on Sunday afternoon, with the Potters winning a hard-fought match 3-2.

Amelia Hazard opened the scoring before an action-packed second half saw the visitors mount a comeback in Leyland, with the Clarets forced to play the final 20 minutes with 10 players.

There were two changes to the side that started Wednesday night’s 5-0 victory over Liverpool Feds, with Rhema Lord-Mears returning to take Grace Palmer’s place in midfield.

Head Coach Rebecca Sawiuk rotated her striking options too, with Claudia Walker replacing Laura Elford from the off.

Stoke’s Jess Reavill required treatment for a head injury sustained less than a minute in but, after that, the Clarets kicked into life and nearly scored twice in two minutes.

The first chance saw Brenna McPartlan have a header from Tilly Wilkes’ corner cleared off the line, before Heidi Logan fired Danielle Maxwell’s cross over from six yards.

Hazard broke the deadlock with 20 minutes on the clock when, after a couple of half clearances, the midfielder half volleyed into the bottom right corner from roughly 12 yards.

After that Stoke rallied and Shannon Stamps fired narrowly wide of the left-hand post when one-on-one with Kirstie Levell, before Evie Priestley had a goal ruled out for offside.

Burnley finished the second half strongest though and perhaps should have had a two-goal advantage at the break.

First Emma Siddall hit Maxwell’s cut back straight at Lauren Bracewell, before Logan also worked the ex-Clarets ‘keeper from six yards.

Anna Grey replaced Maxwell at half-time but it wasn’t the desired restart to proceedings for the Clarets, with three goals in 13 minutes turning the game on its head.

They equalised through a fantastic long-range effort from Stamps before Millie Ravening made it 2-1 with a back-post header from a deep free-kick.

The Potters’ resurgence continued, and Ravening netted her second and the team’s third of the afternoon on the hour with another header.

Sawiuk turned to her bench straight after as she introduced significant firepower in the form of Louanne Worsey and Elford, who replaced Lord-Mears and Walker respectively.

Logan almost produced an audacious goal from the right touchline minutes before Naomi Hartley was given a straight red card.

After a poor tackle by Lucia Molinari that later earned her a yellow card, Hartley was dismissed for her role in the confrontation that followed.

Burnley never gave up and reduced the deficit to one with 11 minutes to play. After Hazzard’s strike was spilled, McPartlan was on hand to tap in from close range.

Palmer replaced Hazard straight after and the final 10 minutes plus stoppage-time saw Sawiuk’s side huff and puff, but an equalising goal wasn’t to come.

After 15 games Burnley have 37 points and sit 3rd in the table with two points less than Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2nd.
