Chadwick strike earns vital three points

Charlie Chadwick’s first-half goal was the difference between the two teams as Burnley Women beat fellow title challengers Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon.

Ross Wallace’s side showed real grit and determination to battle to victory in wet and windy conditions, and are now four points clear of the Midlanders with four games to play,

There was one change to the side that started last week’s 5-0 victory over Rugby Borough, with Brenna McPartlan replacing Emma Siddall.

The latter was named on the bench, alongside Danielle Maxwell and Brooke Cairns.

Burnley enjoyed the better of the possession from the off, and it took Chadwick just six minutes to open the scoring.

She did excellently to control Millie Chandarana’s ball over the top and hold off her defender, before picking out the bottom left corner on the turn.

Chadwick’s running and trickery caused problems throughout, and Yana Daniëls and Claudia Mummery-Walker both worked Wolves ‘keeper Alex Brooks before the break.

The visitors’ first real shot at goal came on the half hour, but Chloe Williams’ 18-yard volley was high and wide.

Neither side were able to create any further chances before the interval, meaning Wallace’s team talk was based on a 1-0 half-time lead.

A handful of fouls, including a yellow card for Daniëls, made it a bitty start to the second half but Wolves were enjoying more of the ball.

They thought they’d restored parity on the hour when former Claret Georgia Marshall headed in following a set piece, but the referee disallowed it for a foul in the build-up.

Wallace turned to his Burnley bench for the first time in the 65th minute, replacing McPartlan and Chadwick with Siddall and Aimee Kelly respectively.

The latter perhaps should have made it 2-0 with 80 on the clock but was denied one-on-one having ran the length of the opposition half with the ball.

Chandarana made way for Naomi Hartley 60 seconds before the officials signalled for six minutes of stoppage-time, and Wolves substitute Beth Merrick fired narrowly over soon afterwards.

The visitors huffed and puffed but were unable to work Kirstie Levell all afternoon, with the Clarets keeping their 14th league clean sheet of the season.

Our points tally now stands at 50 from a possible 56, ahead of next weekend’s trip to Derby County.
