Burnley FC Women exited the Vitality Women’s FA Cup with a 4-1 defeat to Cardiff City Ladies at the Lancashire FA County Ground in Leyland.
The visitors raced into a 3-0 first half lead with a goal from Cori Williams and a brace from Laura Williams before a fourth was added by substitute Ingrid Aadland 11 minutes after the restart. Substitute Evie Priestley scored the consolation in the 89th minute for the Claret Women.
Boss Jonathan Morgan made seven changes from last week’s defeat to Nottingham Forest, with Meg Boydell amongst those coming into the side for her Clarets debut. Alanta Brown also started for the first time in almost four months following her injury earlier in the season.
First Half
The hosts saw a couple of early chances fall their way as Boydell was slipped into the box by Amaya Coleman-Evans but fired her effort wide, and Ellie May shot straight at Wales international goalkeeper Laura O’Sullivan from a similar position.
May saw another strike held by the Cardiff number one before the Dragons themselves took the lead as captain Cori Williams broke in behind before slotting past Lucy Farrell.
Minutes later the visitors doubled their advantage with almost a carbon copy of the first goal, although it was Laura Williams who was the scorer this time.
The same player then added her second of the game, again breaking in behind and placing a lobbed strike into the top corner.
Millie Ravening and Leah Embley had half chances saved by O’Sullivan before the break, but Morgan’s side failed to make a dent into the scoreline ahead of half time.
Second Half
Shortly after, the fourth came through Norwegian substitute Aadland, lobbing ‘keeper Farrell from distance.
Farrell held onto another effort from Laura Williams before Burnley’s own substitute Sarah Greenhalgh latched onto a long ball from Ravening but put her strike from point-blank range.
Fellow substitute Priestley did pull a goal back late on, tapping home from a few yards out after the visitors failed to deal with a cross.
The Claret Women are back in action next Sunday – 5th February – when they travel to Loughborough Lightning in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League (2pm KO).
