Burnley FC Women kicked off the New Year with a 1-0 win against Norwich City Women, progressing into the Fourth Round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup.
Millie Ravening captained the side in the absence of Lauren Bracewell, and it was the midfielder who netted the only goal of the contest against the Canaries in the 13th minute to set up a meeting with Cardiff City Ladies in the next round.
Jonathan Morgan’s side hadn’t played a competitive game since 4th December 2022 after a spate of weather-related postponements prior to a pre-planned festive break in the fixture list.
From that game against the Ewe Rams, there were four changes to the Burnley side at the County Ground in Leyland for the FA cup tie.
First Half
In an opening 45 minutes filled with chances, the Claret Women came out firing and could’ve been two ahead five minutes in after a near miss by Lizzie Hamer and a terrific save from Bryony Williams to deny Evie Priestley.

Norwich ‘keeper Williams then again did well to keep out a looped effort from Hamer, before the breakthrough via Ravening.
Hamer was again involved, setting her midfield partner up with a tidy backheel to the edge of the area for Ravening to hammer home after some initial good work by the returning Leah Embley.
Both Ravening & Priestley saw shots well saved by Williams in quick succession following the opener, with Embley also hitting the crossbar after Kathryn Stanley hit a strike wide at the other end.
City’s Megan Todd also hit the woodwork, while Williams came up trumps again to deny both Embley & Hamer before the break.
Second Half
Norwich started the better at the restart with Ellie Smith seeing a shot blocked at close range before Freya Symonds’ thunderous strike hit the underside of the crossbar before bouncing away from danger.

The next 20 minutes were cagey with both sides limiting chances on their own goal, with the closest either team came a side-foot volley inches wide from Priestley.
Todd again struck the post as the clock ticked into the final 10 minutes of the game, while Ravening’s low strike was held by Williams. Substitute Amaya Coleman-Evans also had a shot from distance tipped behind by the ‘keeper as Burnley saw out three minutes of time added on relatively comfortably.
