Claret Women begin 2023 with re-arranged FA Cup Third Round tie against Canaries

After five weeks without a competitive game, and 11 weeks without a home game, Burnley FC Women are finally back in action at the County Ground, Leyland on Sunday afternoon - 8th January - when they host Norwich City Women in a re-arranged Third Round Vitality Women’s FA Cup tie (4pm KO).

The tie was twice postponed last month due to a frozen pitch at an alternative venue following inclement weather, so this Sunday’s game – which brings a first-ever meeting between the two sides – will be the Claret Women’s first game of 2023.

And to mark the beginning of the New Year, as announced earlier this week, the Club have dedicated Sunday’s game as a ‘Pledgeball’ fixture meaning you have the chance to win a signed shirt!

Back on the pitch, despite the postponements experienced throughout December - along with an already planned festive break in fixtures-, Jonathan Morgan’s side were still able to reflect on a sublime 12 months throughout 2022 which saw them lose only one competitive game in 31 outings.

That one loss came before Morgan’s time at the Club, and thus the first half of this campaign has been an unbeaten one for Burnley with six victories on the spin to end 2022, all of which away from home.

The most recent, on 4th December, saw Evie Priestley net a winner with the last kick of the game deep into time added on in a 3-2 success at Derby County Women to reach the Quarter-Finals of the FA Women’s National League Cup.

They will now host Nottingham Forest Women on 22nd January in the last eight of that competition, but before attention can turn to the Reds, there’s the visit of Norwich to kick off 2023 in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, a competition in which the Claret Women have already progressed through two rounds this term.

Beating Tranmere Rovers Women 9-0 & Cheadle Town Stingers Women 1-0, both away, Morgan’s side know that the prize should they be victorious this Sunday is. Fourth Round tie at home to Cardiff City Ladies which would take place later this month.

They must first get the better of Shaun Howes’ Canaries though, a promotion-chasing fourth-tier outfit who have progressed through the previous three rounds in the FA Cup.

Sat 2nd in Division One South East of the FA Women’s National League at the time of writing, City beat Cambridge United Women 4-1 to reach the First Round Proper in the FA Cup.

Since, they’ve seen off both Enfield Town Ladies (2-0) & Sutton Coldfield Town Ladies (3-2).

Prior to the festive break, Howes added midfielder Eloise Morran & defender Mary Croft to his ranks and both could make their debuts against the Claret Women.
