Midweek football under the lights for Claret women

Following Sunday’s Women’s Challenge Cup game last weekend, Burnley FC Women are straight back to action tomorrow evening as they welcome AFC Fylde Women to Lancashire FA’s County Ground.

Fylde are currently topping the table, in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League, with the Clarets six points behind.

When the two sides met in the league back in August, the Coasters ran out 2-0 winners on the evening with goals from Faye McCoy and Amy Hughes.

However, Burnley fared better when the two came head-to-head in the Women’s FA Cup Second Round in November. Goals from Clarets Lizzy Hamer, Millie Ravening and Katie Thomas were enough to secure a spot in the Fourth Round of the competition, with the game ending 3-2 on the afternoon.

The Claret women have a tough week ahead as following Wednesday evening’s visit from Fylde, the side will welcome Derby County Women on Sunday in what is set to be another tough challenge.

Burnley FC Women Assistant Manager, Amanda Goodwin said: “As a group of staff and a group of players we were very disappointed with the first half of Sunday’s Women’s Challenge Cup game.

“Not taking anything away from Chorley but they obviously contained us and frustrated us, and it showed in our first half performance. However, once we started to work things out, move the ball quicker, be tidy with our possession and not give the ball away and make too many mistakes, the confidence came through, the quality came through and we dominated the second half.

“We’re going into tomorrow’s game knowing it’s not going to be easy, especially how we’ve started games recently.

“Fylde have some experienced players, some quality players, players that can go and win them games, so we know that we have to be on it from the first whistle, until the end of the game.

“We’re not going to take anything lightly; we’re going to go in there with a game plan and we know that we have to work incredibly hard to get the result that we want.”

The game will take place on Wednesday 26th January at Lancashire FA’s County Ground, Leyland, PR25 2LF. KO is 7:45pm and entry is FREE.
