How was Hong Kong Clarets formed?
I became a Claret in 2010, however Burnley was not well-known by locals until the 2016/17 season when Burnley returned to the Premier League. Shortly afterwards, my friends developed the same passion and also became Clarets. We started a group chat specifically to discuss all things Burnley and in 2019 I discovered that a fan page for Burnley had been set up by other local Clarets. We decided to rally together and the Hong Kong Clarets were officially formed!
How do you operate and promote the group?
Most Burnley-related information is shared on our Facebook fans page. Apart from me, we have Joe (the Claret who set up the Facebook page) as our other editor, and we both dig into different English sports channels to gather news which we can share on the page. We also provide personal pre-match predictions and live chat with group members during the game.
As a ventriloquist, I sometimes dress up with my puppet during live performances in the hope this will attract more attention to our Burnley following! We would love to arrange a Hong Kong Clarets gathering, although unfortunately the pandemic has deferred these plans as continued restrictions mean this isn’t currently possible.
Are there any interesting facts about Burnley in Hong Kong?
In Hong Kong, there is a well-known slogan for Burnley: “般尼從來不易” (Burnley is never easy), that is a rewritten lyric from one of the local epic love songs. The original lyric should be “分離從來不易” (Separation is never easy). And the pronunciation of “Burnley” and “separation” is similar in Cantonese. During any Burnley matches, live sport commentator must mention “般尼從來不易” (Burnley is never easy) at least once!
I visited Turf Moor in 2017 and enjoyed a home game. The fans, the match, the stadium, and the atmosphere were all amazing! Hopefully, our members can meet up soon and organise a stadium tour in the future!
