Ashley Westwood is delighted to see Maxwel Cornet in the Claret ranks as Burnley’s final summer signing prepares to start work.
Cornet met up with his new team-mates for the first time on Thursday after jetting in from international duty with the Ivory Coast.
The 24-year-old wide player brings Champions League pedigree to Turf Moor following a six-year spell with French top-flight club Lyon.
That included a run to the semi-finals of the competition in 2020, when a goal from Cornet helped the Ligue 1 side knock out Manchester City.
And Westwood is looking forward to having him on side as Sean Dyche’s men prepare to resume their Premier League campaign at Everton next Monday night.
“We’re all excited at him coming in,” said the Clarets’ midfielder.
“Hopefully he brings something we need. He scored against City – and not many of us have done that!
“Hopefully he can do that during the season and we’re all excited for him to be here.
“If he comes in and works hard he will really enjoy his football here.”
Cornet’s capture from Lyon on a five-year deal made it a quintet of new signings in the summer transfer window for the Clarets.
The former France Under-21 international – who subsequently switched his international allegiance to the country of his birth – followed the arrivals of defenders Nathan Collins and Connor Roberts and goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.
And with wingman Aaron Lennon returning to Turf Moor for a second stint, Westwood believes Burnley’s new faces will all fit in well as Cornet prepares to start training with the squad after a first day’s testing with the Clarets’ sports science staff.
“We did need bodies through the door,” Westwood added.
“Collo has done pre-season with us. Connor is hopefully training this week so he’s getting up to speed.
“They both seem great lads and Wayne has been about and he knows what it’s all about.
“The changing room is an easy place. You come in and you’re integrated straight away.
“Maxwel won’t have a problem doing that.”
