Matej Vydra hopes is first Premier League goal of the season is on the way as the Clarets look to start firing again.
All three of Vydra’s goals this season have come in cup competitions.
But the striker has been knocking on the door to open his account in the league and could get another chance to show his pedigree when Burnley go to Tottenham on Sunday with top scorer Chris Wood also back in the reckoning.
“If you’re not good enough you will never play in the Premier League, which I am playing, so I must have some qualities,” said Vydra – who is just five goals short of 100 in his club career.
“But of course, if you are striker you need to score goals and then your confidence will go higher and higher.
“I have scored a couple of goals in the cups but I’m missing them in the Premier League.
“If I can change the goals in the cups to be Premier League goals I will be happy – but I’m not a magician!
“The closest I came to scoring was against Brighton and I was maybe missing a bit of luck in the second half.
“But I’m not thinking about not scoring goals too much. Sometimes when I think about it too much they don’t come.
“On the training pitch I feel good scoring goals and now I need to bring the goals from the training pitch to the Premier League games.”
Burnley drew a blank last weekend when they couldn’t find a way to beat a West Bromwich Albion side that played for an hour at Turf Moor with 10 men.
But the 0-0 draw with the relegation-threatened Baggies at least allowed Sean Dyche’s men to extend their unbeaten run in the league to four games.
The Clarets remain six points clear of the bottom three as they prepare to face a Spurs side flying high in Europe but only just sitting in the top 10 of the Premier League after losing five of their last six games.
And Vydra believes facing one of the domestic game’s traditional heavyweights may suit Burnley – who have already won at Liverpool and Arsenal this season – at the start of a run of games which also includes fixtures against Leicester City, Arsenal and Everton.
“In my opinion we always play better against the big teams,” added the Czech international, who welcomed a first break in mid-week action since early January in the build-up to the trip to London.
“They try to play more football and it’s more open for us.
“It was tough to play against West Brom because they were one man down, there wasn’t much space and they were waiting for a counter-attack.
“It wasn’t our best day but in can happen in a season. But I think it was another important point for us. We didn’t lose against the teams around us, which is a good thing.
“Fingers crossed it’s going to be a much better performance on Sunday.
“Spurs are looking so strong in the Europa League but struggling a little bit in the Premier League.
“But they are still a huge team in the Premier League with quality players and a very good coach as Jose Mourinho.
“I think they will react and it’s going to be a tough game for us.
“But, finally, we have had a normal week to prepare for Tottenham and fingers crossed that will be good for us because I don’t remember when we had a full week’s preparation for the game.
“We want to start this period with a good result and a good performance, so hopefully everyone will be happy after Sunday’s game.”
