Peterborough United beat Burnley 2-1 in the Premier League Cup at the County Ground, Leyland on a disappointing night for Burnley’s young Clarets.
All the goals came in the first half with Charlie O’Connell (p) and Hameed Ishola scoring for United, with Sam Unwin scoring for Burnley.
Michael Jackson made seven changes to the side that beat Norwich City 4-3 in a league game at Gawthorpe last Friday.
Goalkeeper Sam Waller, midfielders Mark Helm, Ben Woods and Ne-Jai Tucker retained their places.
Jackson went with a revised 5-3-2 formation with Ethen Vaughan and Dara Costelloe operating as wing backs.
There was a familiar face in the opposing ranks. Defender Richard Taylor spent two years in the Burnley Academy before joining Southend United. The Londoner is on trial with the Posh.
Peterborough took a shock lead after 18 minutes when Waller was deemed to have fouled Peterborough striker Hameed Ishola as he looked to gather a cross. The referee initially didn’t give the decision but pointed to the spot after consulting with his assistant.
Charlie O’Connell coolly tucked away the spot kick.
Burnley were level on the half-hour mark, as Ben Woods had a long-range shot saved by Posh keeper Will Lakin, but when Woods crossed the ball back in, Lakin spilled it into the path of Sam Unwin, who rolled the ball into an empty net.

Peterborough went back into the lead two minutes before the break. Former Huddersfield Town winger Andrew Oluwabori fed Ishola who finished well.
Burnley dominated possession in the second half but couldn’t find an equaliser. They nearly capitalised on a soft header from Emmanuel Fernandez. Max Thompson got round the keeper but the former Gillingham defender got back to block.
Thompson then latched on to a long ball and forced a save from the stopper. The ball fell to Unwin but he couldn’t force the ball home.
Jackson made a triple change with Michael Mellon, Joe McGlynn and Owen Dodgson coming on for Unwin, Thompson and Costelloe.
McGlynn had a chance on 71 minutes. He got away from Taylor in the box but saw his forceful shot saved well by Lakin. The rebound evaded Dodgson.
Just before time, Vaughan did well to keep the ball in but his lofted pull back went over the keeper and beyond Mellon in the six-yard box.

Matthew Etherington’s side defended well to keep Burnley at bay and collect a win in their opening fixture in Group D.
