Burnley progressed to the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup after a penalty shoot-out win over Barrow AFC at Gawthorpe.
With the shoot-out locked at 3-3, Josh Galloway hit the bar with Barrow’s fourth penalty and Festus Arthur’s effort was well saved by Sam Waller.
Owen Dodgson, Finn Armstrong, Michael Mellon and Jake Rooney all converted their penalties to send Burnley through.
Experienced midfielder Dale Stephens continued his recovery from summer ankle surgery with 70 minutes before being replaced by Rooney.
Captain Bobby Thomas played against his former club. The centre-back was on loan with Barrow last season. The League Two team fielded a strong side utilising their first-team squad.
In a tight first half, Burnley had the better of the chances. Finn Armstrong cut in from the right but his curling shot was just over.
In the closing minutes of the half, Dara Costelloe came closest to scoring with a diving header from Anthony Glennon’s superb cross it produced a fine save from experienced goalkeeper Josh Lillis. From the resulting corner Michael Mellon had a header blocked and Joe McGlynn couldn’t force the rebound home. Lillis doubles up as goalkeeping coach at Holker Street.
Burnley were awarded a penalty three minutes after the restart when Armstrong was pushed over in the box but Mellon’s penalty was well saved by the ex-Rochdale keeper.
Mark Cooper’s side had a big chance ten minutes into the second half when Galloway headed wide from close range.
Michael Jackson’s side had another shout for a penalty when it appeared Mellon was pushed in the box as he tried to reach a Costelloe cross.
The tie went straight to penalties after 90 minutes. After Galloway’s miss, Waller was the hero with a crucial save from the German-born Arthur.
The Clarets go through to the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup where they will face Bolton Wanderers.
