Clarets take on Wolves in first away game of 2022 as busy end to January begins

Michael Jackson’s U23s side travel to face Wolves in Premier League 2, Division 2 action on Monday evening, the first of four games in 11 days for the Clarets.

Last time out, in action for the first time since the turn of the year, Burnley drew 1-1 with Birmingham City at the Lancashire FA’s County Ground in Leyland as defender Connor Roberts played 60 minutes in his comeback from a recent illness.

Irishman Dara Costelloe continued his scoring streak to put the Clarets ahead prior to the interval, and they pushed for a second to kill the game off after the restart, but an unfortunate own goal five minutes from time denied them all three points against the Blues.

The one point that Jackson’s side did earn from the contest ensured that they remained in the play-off mix of the PL2 league table, sitting seventh and a point off the top-five at the time of writing.

Burnley now begin a run of three consecutive away fixtures in seven days, starting with a trip to Aggborough - the home of Kidderminster Harriers –to take on Wolves.

Monday’s meeting will provide James Collins’ side with their first match of the new year having not played since mid-December due to a bout of COVID within the squad.

On their last outing, the Wanderers drew 0-0 against West Ham in group stages of the Premier League Cup while their previous two league fixtures have ended in defeat.

Collins’ side first lost 5-0 to Norwich City before being defeated 4-2 at home to Fulham, though those two sides occupy the top-two spots in the league accordingly.

Wolves currently sit ninth in the PL2 table, four points behind the Clarets with two games in hand, and the pair have been quite evenly matched in recent meetings too.

Earlier this season, the pair drew 1-1 at Turf Moor as Max Thompson’s second-half penalty put Burnley in front before Luke Cundle drew the visitors’ level.

It also ended in a draw when Wolves made the trip to the County Ground in the last campaign back in January 2021, that contest ending goalless.

Scheduled for a 7PM kick-off at Aggborough, coverage of the U23s meeting with Wolves on Monday night (January 17) will be provided on Twitter via @ClaretsAcademy.
