Michael Jackson and the U23’s continue their Premier League 2 campaign with a home game against Reading on Monday night, looking to build on some recent success.
After being edged out in their opening three league games of the season, Burnley earned a point against Wolverhampton Wanderers with a 1-1 draw and went on to enjoy their first victory of the league campaign in their last outing.
Having made the longest trip of the season, the young Clarets took all three points down on the sunny south coast with a 2-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s courtesy of goals from Sam Unwin and Ne-Jai Tucker.
Unwin came off the bench in the first half and looped a header over the Saints’ goalkeeper just before the break to give Jackson’s side the lead, while Tucker secured the win with a sublime free-kick midway through the second half.
Clarets take on Toffees in Premier League Cup clash at Leyland
With four points on the board, Burnley currently sit 11th in the PL2 table at the time of writing.
Their next opponents – the Royals – have had a slightly quicker start to the new campaign in the early stages and sit in ninth-place with eight points accrued.
Managed by Mehmet Ali, Reading drew 3-3 with Norwich City last time out as forward Mamadi Camara scored an equaliser with the last kick of the game to earn his side a point. The Royals had been 2-0 up, but conceded three without reply to leave them chasing the game.
Last season, Burnley got the better of Reading on both occasions that the two sides came up against each other in the PL2.
The Clarets first won 3-1 at home in December 2020 as Anthony Gomez Mancini and Joel Mumbongo (2) netted, before Max Thompson bagged a brace to secure a 2-0 away victory back in April.
Kicking off at 7:00PM at the Lancashire FA’s County Ground, Reading’s trip to Leyland marks the first of two games in five days for Jackson’s young Clarets, before travelling to Nottingham Forest on Friday evening.
There will unfortunately be no live stream avaliable this evening for the PL2 clash.
