Young defender Owen Dodgson reviews his two game winning goals in the North East against Sunderland, coming up against the League One side’s first-team players and his versatility
Dodgson on his first goals of the season:
“To be honest, the first one was a fluke! I meant for it to go into the bottom right corner but scuffed it and it went bottom left. The second one just came from a well anticipated one-two with Rico [Lewis Richardson].
“Scoring two goals, I was shocked myself, but I’m just happy with the win and happy for the boys.
“I’ve been waiting for it, and it felt weird to be scoring a goal, so to get two on the night is even better. Hopefully that acts as a stepping stone to get some more before the end of the season.”
On facing five of Sunderland’s first team from the start:
“We knew that [they were playing] before the game, but it didn’t faze us whatsoever. We still went into the game as we do with every other one, knowing what the challenge is and being ready for whatever comes our way.”
On goalkeeper Sam Waller’s performance at the Stadium of Light:
“He kept us in the game [in the first half] and helped me out on one occasion after I’d lost the ball with him pulling off a fantastic save. Sam’s been doing really well recently and has been training with the first team, so well done to him.
“I thought that we did really well defensively with no goals conceded and a clean sheet, which is a real positive.”
On playing at full back or on the wing:
“I want to help the team out as much as I can, getting forward and defending. Before the game, I was speaking with Jacko [Michael Jackson, U23s boss] and Faz [Andy Farrell, U23s assistant], and the most important thing for them was for me to defend.
“That was my main aim going into it, as it should be for a defender, but as I got the opportunity to go forward, I got myself the two goals which is always a positive.”
On the experience of playing at Sunderland:
“It was definitely a great feeling playing at the Stadium of Light. I thought that we did really well on a very good pitch and it was great experience for the lads to come away [from here] with three points.”
