Michael Jackson was pleased with his side's performance against Rangers with plenty of positives to bring away from the game.
Despite falling to a 4-2 defeat at the Champions' training ground, the interim U23s boss believes progression has been made in the early days of pre-season.
And the former Shrewsbury Town and Tranmere Rovers manager was happy with the overall effort from the youngsters on a scorching afternoon on the outskirts of Glasgow when two goals from skipper Rob Harker kept the Clarets in the hunt.
Jackson said: “It’s the first game back, playing Rangers who are five games ahead of us already in terms of pre-season with their season starting on Saturday.
“But there were some good points in the game. They’re young players and they’re improving and developing all the time.

“It was a good workout for the boys though. We have a few trialists involved in the group, but from what I’ve seen, we were pleased with it - especially some of the attacking play.
"Defensively we were a bit loose, but I think both teams were. It was a bit like a basketball game at times, it could have been 7-7.
“But on the whole, from looking at it so far, it’s progression from where we were a few days ago.”
A handful of the regular U23s players have stayed back at base with Sean Dyche's senior side as pre-season looks to get into the swing of things.
But Jackson admits that that's the aim, to get the U23s in and around the first team to give the next group an opportunity to impress and look up to the youngsters around the first team.

“That’s what our aim and idea is, to get people to train with the first team, that’s always what we want to do," he added.
“For the lads that have stayed back and to be around the role models, who are at the top, that’s priceless for them.
“So then it’s a good test now for the lads that are up here that are maybe a year or two behind those. It’s a nice challenge for them to try and get there too and that’s what they aspire to do."
