After Friday’s victory over AFC Bournemouth at Turf Moor, Burnley U21s turn their attention to Wrexham and the Central League Cup on Tuesday afternoon.
This is Burnley’s last Group B fixture of the campaign and, having won all three of their previous matches, a draw here would ensure progression to the semi-finals of the competition.
Andy Farrell’s team come into the game in fine form, winning their last three games and scoring 11 goals in the process.
As previously mentioned, the Clarets overcame Bournemouth in the Professional Development League last week.
Renaldo Torraj and Tom Tweedy put them in control with goals in the opening 19 minutes and after the Cherries pulled one back, Vernon Masara completed the scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
That resulted followed previous victories over Crewe Alexandra and Coventry City.
Run by the EFL, the Central League Cup is classed as a ‘reserve’ competition, meaning there are no age limits for players taking part.
Burnley have previously toppled Accrington Stanley 3-1 after beating Blackburn Rovers 2-0 and fellow Lancashire side Preston North End 4-0.
Wrexham sit 4th in the five-team table after beating Preston and losing to Accrington Stanley.
The Welsh outfit are the only team that can prevent Burnley winning the group but would need to win on Tuesday and their final game.
The Red Dragons’ reserve team had a Central League game last week, and manager Dave Jones named a highly experienced starting XI including nine of the regular first team squad.
It remains to be seen what kind of team they will field for this fixture.
Kick-off at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium, the home of Airbus UK Broughton, is 1pm, and supporters are welcome to attend for free.
