Clarets look to get back to winning ways with trip to Latics

Burnley FC’s U21s side are back in action on Monday, as they travel to the DW Stadium to take on Wigan Athletic in the Professional Development League (1pm KO, BST).

The Clarets fell to defeat last time out, with a 4-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday in torrential rain at the Burnley Training Centre.

The Owls opened the scoring in the 32nd minute as Joey Phuti hammered the ball into the back of the net past Charlie Casper, after finding space in the box.

Bailey Cadamarteri netted the second after the break, latching onto a short pass before rounding Casper to score.

Favour Onukwuli made it three before Cadamarteri bagged his second of the game with five minutes to go.

That defeat leaves the Clarets sat 7th in the Professional Development League table.

Monday’s opponents Wigan are managed by Stephen Crainey and have begun the season in a similar fashion to Burnley, winning two, drawing one and losing two in their opening five games.

Last time out the Latics claimed three points with a 3-1 victory over 2nd placed side Birmingham City.

Romelle Donovan gave the Blues the lead before a Trialist equalised for Crainey’s Wigan and goals from Abdul Sharif and Josh Stones, either side of red cards for Menzi Mazwi and goalscorer Donovan, secured three points for the Latics.

In the last meeting between these two sides, it was Monday’s hosts that were on the winning side, beating a much less experienced Clarets team 3-0 at the Lancashire FA County Ground.

First team player Tom Pearce opened the scoring for the Latics after 14 minutes before doubling the lead himself early in the second half.

Chris Sze rifled home Wigan’s third before substitute Deji Sotona was sent off for a second bookable offence with six minutes to go.
