Young Clarets head to the south coast

Burnley U21s resume their Premier League 2 campaign with a lengthy trip to Southampton on Friday night.

In what is a busy schedule after the international break, this match follows Tuesday night’s penalty shootout defeat to Solihull Moors in the National League Cup.

There was nothing to separate the two teams after a goalless 90 minutes and, as per competition rules, spot-kicks determined which team would earn a bonus point.

The Midlanders produced five perfect penalties to Burnley’s four, giving them the win on a crisp Autumn evening.

Burnley’s last PL2 match was a home defeat to Leeds United, with the Whites winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Louie Dudley and Harry Gray.

Defender Murray Campbell netted his first goal of the season at Turf Moor, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a second league defeat of the campaign.

After three matches Burnley sit 17th in the 29-team PL2 table with three points.

Southampton have made a strong start to their season, claiming seven points from a possible nine.

The Saints made what will be their longest trip on the opening weekend when they won 2-1 at Newcastle United, before beating fellow Northeast outfit Sunderland 3-2 at home.

Tonda Eckert’s side were then held to an entertaining 2-2 draw at Ipswich but like Burnley, the young Saints fell to defeat in the National League Cup earlier this week.

They were 2-0 down to Woking at half-time and Sufianu Dibaga reduced their arrears after the interval, but it wasn’t enough to earn a result.

Southampton sit 6th in the PL2 table heading into this one.

Friday’s match is a 7pm kick-off, and any supporters in the area are welcome to get behind Farrell’s side in person.
