Young Clarets travel to league leaders

Burnley U21s will be aiming for a fourth straight victory when they travel to Yorkshire to take on Sheffield United on Tuesday afternoon.

The match is 1st against 3rd in the Professional Development League North table, presenting an opportunity for the young Clarets to gain ground on the Blades.

After not quite getting the results their performances deserved in the early stages of the season, Andy Farrell’s side have picked up nine points from the last nine available.

Their last outing was a 3-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra at the County Ground in Leyland, with a blistering start resulting in three goals in the opening 23 minutes.

Charlie Veevers was first to add his name to the scoresheet, before Kamarni Ryan followed his brace against Queens Park Rangers with another one here.

Burnley now have 11 points from seven matches, with 2nd-placed Hull City having 12 and Sheffield United boasting 16.

The Blades’ points tally is made even more impressive knowing that they have played a game less.

Led by Gary McSheffrey, United have won five games in a row and conceded just three goals in the 2024/25 season to date.

They were 2-0 victors over Cardiff City last time out, with Ryan Oné and Jay Tinsdale on target in the first half.

These two teams played out an entertaining 2-2 draw the last time they met, which was in April 2024 at the SMH Group Stadium in Chesterfield.

Tommy McDermott was on target in the first quarter of the match but the Blades fought back to lead 2-1 with 10 minutes to play.

Farrell’s side refused to give up, though, and youngster Vernon Masara struck with four minutes to play to earn a well-deserved point.

Supporters are welcome to attend this fixture, which is at the LNER Community Stadium in York (YO32 9AF). Tickets can be bought on the door at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.
