Burnley U21s hit the road this weekend, travelling north to take on Newcastle United at their Academy training ground in Premier League 2.

The young Clarets will be aiming to head into the international break with a positive performance and result, following last week’s home defeat to Birmingham City.

It took six minutes for the Midlanders to open the scoring that night, with winger Menzi Mazwi cutting in from the right to beat Lewis Forshaw with a powerful effort at his near post.

Dan Isichei made it 2-0 to the visitors before the half-time break and Birmingham were able to manage the second 45 well to claim all three points.

A good omen, perhaps, is the fact that Andy Farrell’s team recorded a big victory the last time they played away from home.

That was a 4-1 scoreline at Norwich City, with Jesse Williams scoring twice alongside strikes from Joe Bevan and Kian McMahon-Brown.

After eight PL2 matches Burnley are 23rd in the 29-team table with six points.

Newcastle United’s U21s have had a similar start to their campaign, earning a point less from the same number of matches.

There are likely to be some players involved on Saturday who played against Athletic Club in the UEFA Youth League, which is a U19s competition, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Toon teenagers went two nil down against their Spanish opponents but drew level through Sean Neave’s penalty and Scott Bailey’s solo goal.

Parity lasted less than a minute thanks to Peio Huestamendia and despite Iker Quintero being sent off for the visitors, Newcastle were unable to equalise again.

Their last PL2 match was at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road stadium five days prior and it was the Suffolk side that came out on top thanks to Fin Barbrook’s solitary strike.

Newcastle are managed by Adam Lawrence, a Londoner who joined the club in September having previously overseen Manchester United’s U18s.

Saturday’s match is a 1pm kick-off, and any supporters in the area are welcome to get behind Farrell’s side in person. Entry is free for all.
