Young Clarets travel to the Midlands

Burnley U21s hit the road on Tuesday with three points on their mind when they take on Coventry City in the Professional Development League.

The young Clarets are keeping in touch with the top two in the North section, and it’s those two positions that will go into the end of season play-offs against the southern division.

Andy Farrell’s side come into the match on the back of Friday’s Lancashire FA Senior Cup victory over Morecambe.

It was a young squad that included eight of Tony Philliskirk’s U18s group, with four starting on a bitterly cold day.

One of those players, second-year scholar Zach Johnson, opened the scoring with a close-range header before the Shrimps equalised with a fantastic goal on the volley.

That took the match to penalties and with Johnson, Murray Campbell and Benji Wetshi all netting, goalkeeper Lewis Forshaw played a key role by saving two spot-kicks to earn a 3-0 win.

Burnley’s last league outing was 4-0 victory on the road at Barnsley in the last week of January, in which Joe Bauress scored twice as part of a 4-0 win.

As it stands Farrell’s side are 3rd in the 11-team table with 25 points from 18 matches, courtesy of 11 wins and two draws.

Coventry are slightly lower down the standings but their points total of 22 comes from two matches fewer.

Managed by Mark Delaney, the Sky Blues were beaten 2-0 by Birmingham City in their last outing.

Before that, though, they produced a 14-0 thrashing of Colchester United in which Aidan Dausch scored five and Charlie Finney bagged a hat-trick.

Dausch has since joined National League South side St Albans City on a month-long loan deal.

Burnley produced a dominant result when these two teams met at Turf Moor back in October, eventually winning 5-0.

Several first-team players joined the squad that day and the Clarets looked dominant from start to finish, although Joe Westley scored the only goal of the first half.

The striker netted again shortly after the break before three goals in 12 minutes made sure of the points. Tom Tweedy, Alex Healy-Byrne and Enock Agyei were all on target.

Supporters are welcome to show their support in person for free, with the match taking place at Coventry’s academy facilities at the Alan Higgs Centre (CV3 1HW). Kick-off is 1pm.
