Lancashire FA Senior Cup tie awaits

A place in the final of this season’s Lancashire FA Senior Cup is at stake when Burnley U21s face their Wigan Athletic counterparts at lunchtime on Friday.

A young Burnley side were beaten in last year’s final, so the Clarets will be keen to get a win here and make the last two again.

Andy Farrell’s side head into it on the back of a home defeat to Reading in Premier League 2, which finished 3-1 to the Royals last Friday.

Ashqar Ahmed gave the Berkshire outfit an early lead, before Reece Evans’ brace put them in firm control of the tie.

Charlie Veevers’ third goal of the campaign, a well-taken half volley from the edge of the area, was a consolation, but Burnley were unable to turn the tide.

Our LFA Cup quarter final was against Barrow back in September, and the Cumbrians took a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to experienced striker Innes Cameron.

The young Clarets hit back in the second half, though, with goals from Kian McMahon-Brown and Ellis Clark in a blistering five-minute spell confirming progression.

Wigan Athletic operate a Category Two Academy, meaning they compete in the Professional Development League.

The Latics are currently 14th in those 20-team standings having earned five wins and four draws from their 17 outings to date.

Wigan’s U21s are winless in their last five outings, the last of which saw Hull City come from behind to earn a 2-1 win on Tuesday.

This is the first time that the Greater Manchester based side will play in this competition this season, having received a bye in the quarter finals.

The away team was victorious both times these two teams met in the Professional Development League last season.

Tom Tweedy and Tommy McDermott netted in a 2-0 Burnley win at Christopher Park in October 2024, before the Latics recorded a 3-1 triumph at the County Ground in Leyland.

Kick-off at Burnley Training Centre (BB12 8UA) is 12.30pm, and supporters are able to attend for free.
