Burnley U21s continue their Premier League Cup journey with a last 16 tie under the lights against Category One outfit Sunderland on Monday night.

The young Clarets were dominant in the group stages of this competition and finished top of Group G with 16 points from a possible 18.

They were six points clear of the nearest challengers Luton Town and managed 18 goals in the process, conceding only three.

Andy Farrell’s team were victorious in their last Premier League Cup match at the start of February, beating Reading 4-1.

Joao Mendes opened the scoring against the Royals and, alongside Joe Ashton’s first goal of the season, Kamarni Ryan netted a brace on a productive evening in Leyland.

Results have dipped slightly in recent weeks though, and Farrell will be looking for a reaction from his side against the Black Cats.

Sunderland have been the very definition of middle of the road in PL2 this season as they currently sit 13th in the 26-team table.

Led by manager Graeme Murty, the Wearsiders finished 2nd in Group D behind Sheffield United to progress to the knockout stages of this competition.

They come into this match in similar form to us in that they are winless in their last three outings.

Earlier this week, West Bromwich Albion produced a come-from-behind victory to win 2-1 with goals in the 77th and 90th minutes.

Chorley FC’s Grant Store Victory Park Stadium (PR7 3DU) is the venue and Burnley season ticket holders can gain free entry by presenting their season ticket at the turnstiles on the night.
