Young Clarets start 2025 against league leaders

Burnley U21s resume their season with a top-of-the-table clash against Sheffield United on Tuesday night.

The young Clarets ended 2024 on a high, going through December unbeaten in four matches, taking 10 points from a possible 12.

Their last outing was an impressive 4-0 victory over Hull City on Tuesday 17th December, which took place at Chorley’s Grant Store Victory Park Stadium.

Goals from Joe Westley and Michael Mellon in a four-minute first-half spell gave Andy Farrell’s team control on a windy night, before Joe Bauress and Brandon Ly added their names to the scoresheet after the break.

It’s tight at the top of the Professional Development League table, with Burnley’s 29 points from 15 matches bettered by only two teams – Hull City and Sheffield United.

The Blades have amassed 33 points from 10 wins and three draws, sitting top of the table ahead of Hull by three points.

Managed by former Birmingham City and Coventry City boss Gary McSheffrey, the Blades have enjoyed another successful season having won the national PDL title last term.

They have, however, seen their league form drop slightly of late – losing their last two matches by a single goal each.

The latest of those came in December as they played out an action-packed match with Coventry City, in which first-team player Rhys Norrington-Davies was shown a red card.

United did well to rally late on having been 4-1 down, but Louie Marsh’s brace and a further strike from Andre Brooks weren’t enough to earn them a result.

Burnley and the Blades have met once already this season, with the Yorkshire-based side edging a well-contested match at the LNER Community Stadium in York.

Ismaila Coulibaly scored the only goal on the October afternoon, picking out the top left corner from 20 yards with 55 minutes on the clock.

Supporters are welcome to attend the game at the County Ground (PR25 2LF), with Burnley season ticket holders able to gain free access by presenting your card at the gate.

Other adults are priced at £5 and concessions are £2.

Kick-off is 7pm and there is no need to purchase in advance of arriving at the venue. Free parking is also available on site.
