LFA Senior Cup quarter final awaits

Burnley U21s welcome Morecambe to the training ground on Friday afternoon, with a place in the semi finals of the Lancashire FA Senior Cup up for grabs.

Having lost last season’s final to Barrow on penalties, the young Clarets are fighting to regain the trophy they previously won in the 2022/23 season.

It’s a quick turn around for Andy Farrell’s side, who were last in action at the County Ground in Leyland on Tuesday night.

That was the last match of their Premier League Cup group stage campaign and Burnley came out 3-1 winners on the night, topping the group with 16 points from a possible 18.

João Mendes got the team off to a flying start with a well-taken goal less than two minutes in, but the Royals hit back soon after through Jack Senga.

Kamarni Ryan restored the lead with the first of his two goals on the stroke of half-time and, after Reading threatened to fight their way back into the tie, Joe Ashton netted his first goal of the season to put the result beyond any doubt.

Ryan struck again in second-half stoppage-time to put an extra layer of gloss on the night and the striker now has 14 goals to his name in all competitions.

Farrell’s side started this season’s LFA Senior Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Blackpool before Christmas.

Two players who are now out on loan in Lewis Richardson and Joe Westley struck in the opening 10 minutes and, after the Tangerines pulled one back, Ryan was on target late on again.

This is a ‘Reserves’ competition meaning teams can field players of any age.

With Morecambe not having a dedicated U21s group, the Shrimpers are likely to field a group mainly consisting of U18s players and have the option to drop in first-team players too.

Led by Lead Professional Development Phase Coach Ollie Ras, their last EFL Youth Alliance League match saw them lose 2-0 to Blackpool earlier this week.
