Burnley U21s are in knockout action on Monday night, with Brentford visiting Leyland’s County Ground in the Premier League Cup.

The young Clarets reached the semi-final of this competition last season and have their eyes firmly set on progression here.

Andy Farrell’s side ended a run of four games without victory on Friday, beating Wigan Athletic 3-1 in the Lancashire FA Senior Cup.

They had to come from behind, though, and it was first-team midfielder James Ward-Prowse who restored parity with an inch-perfect free-kick.

Burnley had the better of the second half and the performance got its just rewards, with young striker Kian McMahon-Brown netting twice to confirm the win.

Farrell’s team’s Premier League Cup run started by finishing top of Group F, with the latest game being a 1-0 victory at Queens Park Rangers before Christmas.

Brentford, who reached last year’s Premier League Cup final, operate a Category Two academy, meaning they compete in the Professional Development League.

The Bees have enjoyed a positive league season to date, sitting 4th in the 20-team standings with 29 points from 17 matches.

Operating a B team model means the Londoners have the chance to operate a unique set up, and they travelled to Spain for a mini training camp earlier his week.

While they were there, they contested a 0-0 draw with Ukrainian Premier League side FC Kryvbas.

Former Brentford midfielder Sam Saunders is the man in the dugout. The 42-year-old made more than 500 professional appearances in his playing career.

The Bees made the lengthy trip to Turf Moor for a Professional Development League clash in April 2025 and returned home happy having earned a 2-1 victory.

Mike Tresor set up Julien Vetro for the Clarets to take the lead, but Isaac Holland’s double turned the match on its head.

Kick-off at the County Ground in Leyland (PR25 2LF) is 7pm on Monday 9th February, and supporters are welcome to get behind the team in person.

Burnley season ticket holders can get in for free by showing their season ticket at the turnstiles, while other adults are priced at £5. Concessions are £2.50.
