The first competitive Burnley game of the week sees the U21s welcome Birmingham City to Lancashire in the Professional Development League on Tuesday evening.
Andy Farrell’s team will be aiming to move on from last week’s defeat to Barrow in the final of the 2023/24 Lancashire FA Senior Cup final, which was a tale of late penalty drama.
Joe Westley’s first-half goal, which was set up by a lovely pass from Joao Mendes, looked to have earned the young Clarets silverware at the SO Legal Stadium.
However, Chris Popov’s 83rd-minute spot-kick after a foul by Alex Healy-Byrne turned the tide and the match went straight to a shootout after 90 minutes.
Joe Bauress, Charlie Veevers and Ryan Tioffo were all on target from 12 yards, but Tom Tweedy and Benn Ward’s saved efforts gifted the hosts victory on the day.
It’s been a little while since the young Clarets’ last league outing, which saw them lose to Sheffield Wednesday on a Monday afternoon in mid November.
That 3-2 scoreline ended Farrell’s team’s nine-match winning run, and Burnley will be aiming to claim another valuable three points at the top of the North section table.
The Clarets are currently 3rd with 23 points from their 13 matches, which leaves them 10 points behind leaders Sheffield United and one adrift of Hull City in 2nd.
Birmingham City haven’t fared as well and find themselves 8th with 11 points from their 12 outings to date.
Managed by Steve Spooner, it will have been a week since the Blues’ last fixture when this one comes around.
Daniel Isichei and Ben Wodkou scored two apiece as they beat Rugby Town in the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.
That was also a fourth match unbeaten for the second city club, who held impressive league leaders Sheffield United to a 1-1 draw in their last league outing.
Supporters are welcome to attend the game at the County Ground (PR25 2LF), with Burnley season ticket holders able to gain free access by presenting your card at the gate.
Other adults are priced at £5 and concessions are £2.
Kick-off is 7pm and there is no need to purchase in advance of arriving at the venue. Free parking is also available on site.
