National League Cup campaign comes to an end

Burnley U21s are preparing to face senior opposition in Brackley Town on Tuesday night, with their National League Cup campaign coming to a close.

Because of previous results the young Clarets are unable to qualify for their knockout stages of the National League Cup but will want to put on a strong showing in Northamptonshire.

Andy Farrell’s side will need to bounce back from Thursday’s Premier League Cup defeat to Queens Park Rangers U21s, in which they took a first-half lead.

It was Benji Wetshi who was on target with his first goal of the season, but Burnley were pegged back almost immediately before the Londoners took control of the tie in the second half.

Jaylan Pearman and Archie O’Brien secured the victory for the R’s, with Farrell and co now preparing for a two-game week.

Our last match in the National League Cup was at Tamworth in October, and the Midlanders recorded a comfortable victory on the night.

Brackley Town are competing at National League level for the first time in their history, having won the National League North with 92 points last year.

The Saints had finished in the play-offs but not gained promotion in six of the previous seven seasons.

It’s been a mixed start to life in tier five, with the team currently sitting 18th in the 24-team table with 20 points from as many matches.

They head into Tuesday night on the back of a 3-2 league defeat at home to York City, in which they fought back from a goal down to lead 2-1 before being pegged back again.

Brackley’s last National League Cup match was a 1-1 draw with Everton a month ago, and the Saints are well-placed to progress to the knockout stages.

That will be the aim of manager Gavin Cowan, an ex-professional player who took the reins in May 2023 having previously been in charge of AFC Telford United.

Tuesday’s match is a 7.45pm kick-off at St James Park (NN13 7EJ) and tickets can be purchased online HERE at £7 for adults and £4 for concessions (over 65s, students and blue light card holders).

Children are free, but a complimentary ticket must be claimed. It is important to note that ticket prices will increase by £3 at the stadium on matchday.
