Clarets travel south in league play-offs

Burnley U21s take on AFC Bournemouth U21s on Monday night, with a place in the national Professional Development League final at stake.

The young Clarets head into this semi-final on the back of five straight league victories, but will come up against an in-form Cherries side who have taken the maximum points from their last 13 games.

Andy Farrell's team finished the regular season with a comfortable victory at Cardiff City earlier this week, with two goals in each half contributing to the 4-1 scoreline.

The Bluebirds took a seventh-minute lead through Tanatswa Nyakuhwa but we held our nerve to bounce back with two goals in two minutes from Kamarni Ryan and Tommy McDermott.

After controlling much of the game after the break, Tom Tweedy and Benji Wetshi netted to add the gloss to a positive afternoon all round.

Burnley finished 2nd in the North section with 59 points from their 31 matches – five less than league winners Sheffield United.

AFC Bournemouth finished top of the pile on goal difference in the South section, with the Cherries and Brentford both claiming 67 points.

Third-placed Millwall were just a point adrift, creating a fight that ran right through until the final day.

Led by manager Alan Connell, the south coast side finished their campaign with an emphatic home victory over Wigan Athletic at Vitality Stadium.

An eventful first half saw Bournemouth take a three-goal lead thanks to Daniel Adu-Adjei’s brace and a further strike from Remy Rees-Dottin.

The Latics then pulled two back before half-time to set up an interesting second period but were unable to mount a comeback, with Dominic Sadia adding a fourth before Adu-Adjei completed his hat-trick.

We have already travelled down to Bournemouth once this season, with the Cherries coming from behind twice to earn a last-gasp victory back in August.

Charlie Veevers and Brandon Ly produced two fantastic finishes for the Clarets, but after restoring parity the hosts won it through Jonny Day in the 92nd minute.

Should it be level after 90 minutes on Monday night, the match will go to extra-time and later penalties if needed.
