Burnley U21s continued their pre-season friendly schedule with a trip to Warrington Rylands on Tuesday night, losing 3-2 despite a Joe Westley brace.

The match was an opportunity for players to get more valuable minutes in their legs, with a number of those selected to start being players who featured in Saturday’s first team friendlies at Huddersfield Town and Shrewsbury.

Charlie Casper kept goal behind an experienced back line featuring Murray Campbell, Logan Pye and Joe Ashton.

Further forwards, Saturday’s goal scorers against the Terriers Tommy McDermott and Westley both started.

In a quiet first half 16-year-old Kian McMahon-Brown came closest to opening the scoring, but his close-range effort was straight down the Rylands ‘keeper’s throat.

Charlie Veevers replaced McDermott in a planned change at the break, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring two minutes after the restart through Ben Hardcastle.

Westley then struck twice in two minutes to turn the game on its head, with the second goal a particularly well-taken finish into the bottom right corner.

Manager Andy Farrell then started to turn to his bench, with Noah Adekoya, Kamarni Ryan, Zach Johnson, Benji Wetshi and Vernon Masara all coming on before the 70th minute.

Hardcastle restored parity with a 22-yard free-kick and completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in added time at the end of the 90.
