Burnley U21s recorded their third Premier League 2 victory of the season on Monday night, beating Stoke City 3-1.

Zach Johnson, Roman Egan-Riley and Vernon Masara were all on target at Mornflake Stadium, and the Potters’ two red cards helped Burnley to the three points.

There were four changes to the side that started last week’s Premier League Cup victory over Colchester United, with Cameron Scott and Marley Leuluai stepping into the defence.

Charlie Veevers started in midfield after his influential cameo off the bench, with U17 forward Vishon Masara making his U21s debut and partnering his older brother Vernon up top.

It took just five minutes for the Clarets to break the deadlock. Ellis Clark picked out a fantastic diagonal to Murray Campbell, whose first-time cross was met by Johnson’s close-range finish.

There was a feisty nature to proceedings, with both teams picking up yellow cards before Stoke’s Japhet Matondo was shown a straight red for a high challenge on Oisin Cooney.

As the home team Stoke ventured forward when they could, and Ryan Liu came close to an equaliser when he grazed the side netting from the edge of the area.

Andy Farrell’s team dominated the rest of the first half though, with both Campbell and Oli Pimlott unlucky not to add to the scoreline with a header and dink respectively.

Stoke’s misery was compounded when they went down to nine men just three minutes after the restart, with Pedro Nzau adjudged to have been the last man when fouling Clark.

Egan-Riley then got a toe on a powerful Veevers shot to divert it past Caleb Clothier for his first Clarets goal just before the hour.

Farrell turned to his bench for the first time in the celebrations, introducing U16s Jas Mmakogu and Glen Ilunga in place of Veevers and Vi. Masara.

The Burnley domination continued for the rest of the 90 in truth, with the Potters unable to work their way past their player disadvantage.

It was 3-0 in the 73rd minute, with Masara netting his second goal in as many matches from the edge of the area.

Further changes then saw U17 defenders Diandro Fletchman and Luca Fong replace Egan-Riley and Scott respectively, and the rest of the 90 passed without much incident.

Stoke managed a consolation in the fourth minute of stoppage time, though, when Daniel Eyaife whipped a free-kick onto the head of fellow substitute Jonathan Unwin and in.

After 17 league matches the Clarets now have 12 points. Next up is the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday 16th March.
