Young Clarets confirm Premier League Cup progression

Jaydon Banel’s first-half penalty was the difference as Burnley U21s beat their Queens Park Rangers counterparts 1-0 on Friday night.

The Young Clarets now have 12 points from their five Premier League Cup Group F matches to date, guaranteeing them a place in the last 16 of the competition.

There were four changes from the team that started the last outing against Cardiff City three weeks ago today, with second-year scholars Albert Blackie and Michael Stanley coming into defence.

Fellow U18 George Brierley stepped into the midfield and captained the side, while first-team winger Enock Agyei earned his first minutes of the season as he continues his recovery from injury.

The early stages were affected by a QPR injury and subsequent substitution, with Kian McMahon-Brown first to test the opposing ‘keeper in the 11th minute.

Agyei looked threatening very time he received the ball on the right, cutting inside and testing Charlie Warren twice before firing another effort off the bar in the opening half hour.

It was his fellow winger Banel who eventually broke the deadlock with 32 on the clock when, having been fouled in the area, he confidently picked out the bottom left corner from the spot.

QPR’s only real first-half chance of note was a powerful 20-yard free-kick, but Oisin Cooney produced a flying save to his left to preserve his clean sheet at the half-time break.

A planned change saw Agyei make way for Vernon Masara at the interval and the Londoners emerged from the dressing rooms with the bit between their teeth.

Two good chances fell their way in the opening 10 minutes, but Cooney did well to repel testing efforts from Jake Leahy and Jaylan Pearman.

Manager Andy Farrell made a double change with 72 on the clock, replacing Ellis Clark and McMahon-Brown with Charlie Veevers and Marley Leuluai respectively.

That meant a change of formation to five at the back, and Joe Bevan made way for Zach Johnson soon afterwards to add more fresh legs in attack.

Johnson had an immediate impact, whipping a corner onto the head of Hannes Delcroix who thought his effort was over the line, but the officials disagreed.

Brierley then had one of the better chances of the night to add extra gloss to the result, but his shot was too high after being played through one on one.

QPR huffed and puffed but were unable to create an opening of note, meaning Burnley recorded back-to-back victories in this competition and returned to Lancashire with another three points.
