Burnley U21s turned on the style with an impressive 5-2 victory over Peterborough United in the Professional Development League on Tuesday afternoon.
Tom Tweedy, Joe Westley, Joe Bevan, Benn Ward and Kamarni Ryan were all on target as the team made it nine goals in two games following Friday night’s win at Luton Town.
Andy Farrell shuffled his pack in Cambridgeshire, with Jon Ander Vilar Robinson returning in goal and centre-back Jesse Williams starting in the absence of Murray Campell, who is away with Scotland U19s.
Hamzat Balogun and João Mendes were given their first Burnley starts and Bevan recovered from an ankle issue to take a place on the bench alongside U18s midfielder Troy Savage.
Peterborough arguably made the better start and opened the scoring through David Kamara, who picked out the bottom left corner in the 12th minute.
The hosts looked comfortable on the ball and were utilising the physicality of forwards Kamara and Pemi Aderoju to good effect, testing Williams and stand-in centre-back Will Hugill.
However, two Burnley goals in three minutes turned the game on its head around the half hour.
The first came from Tweedy, who latched onto Westley’s through ball and finished across Posh ‘keeper Will Blackmore for his debut goal of the campaign.
Having netted twice at Kenilworth Road Westley then got himself on the scoresheet here with an expertly taken free-kick into the top left corner.
Farrell made two planned changes at half-time, with captain Ward and top scorer Ryan replacing Joe Bauress and Westley respectively.
Bevan and Alex Healy-Byrne were introduced on the hour and the former had an immediate impact, cutting inside from the right and finishing smartly just two minutes later to make it 3-1.
Peterborough refused to throw in the towel and reduced their arrears shortly afterwards through Harley Mills, who was quickest on to a loose ball from a corner to score.
16-year-old Savage was given his second U21s appearance of the campaign in the aftermath of that goal, replacing Brad Grant.
Burnley then managed to score a double even faster than they did in the first half and that made sure that the three points would be heading back to Lancashire.
When a Tweedy corner found its way through the crowded penalty area, Ward was on hand to head in at the back post.
Ryan then netted his 7th goal of the season with another extremely well taken finish 15 minutes from the time.
A fourth league win of the season takes the team’s points tally to 14 from nine matches, just one behind 2nd-placed Hull City.
Next up is a Premier League Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion, which takes place at Turf Moor on Saturday 12th October.
