Young Clarets contest entertaining goalless draw in Suffolk

An end-to-end encounter between Burnley U21s and their Ipswich Town counterparts eventually finished 0-0 under the Monday night lights at Portman Road.

Both sides had plenty of chances to trouble the scorers, but a combination of wasteful finishing and excellent defending ensured there was nothing to separate the teams on the night.

There were four changes from the side that lost to Brighton & Hove Albion last time out, with Logan Pye making his first appearance since returning from his loan at Accrington Stanley.

Zach Johnson, Charlie Veevers, and Vernon Masara were also recalled from the off, with the five-strong bench including two U18s and two U17s.

Masara had the first real chance of the night but pulled his effort wide of the left-hand post having been played through by Veevers’ clever flick-on.

At the other end Oisin Cooney did well to thwart Charlie Compton from range and Sid Eldred hit the bar, before the Young Clarets missed a golden opportunity to take the lead.

Excellent pressing from Masara won his team a penalty, but Ipswich ‘keeper George Barrett redeemed himself by saving our number 9’s spot-kick and Ellis Clark’s rebound.

Andy Farrell’s side finished the half the better of the two teams and will have been disappointed not to have gone into their team talk with the lead.

After Clark smacked the bar from the edge of the area, the Scot had a sumptuous dink hooked off the line by Harvey Duggins.

Jack McEvilly replaced Pye in a planned change at the break and the hosts restarted quickly, with Luca Fletcher almost latching onto a fizzing cross after 16 seconds.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic through, with Brandon Pouani working Barrett after some magnificent step overs and Roman Egan-Riley heading narrowly over before the hour.

Veevers then forced a flying save when his 30-yard free-kick looked destined for the top left corner, while strong blocks from Egan-Riley and McEvilly kept it goalless in an end-to-end battle.

Farrell made his second change in the 83rd minute, with James Lewis making his Premier League 2 debut in place of Pouani.

Fellow first-year scholar Dylan Morison replaced Clark shortly afterwards and Burnley pushed right until the very end, with Masara flashing an effort inches wide in the 91st minute.

Ipswich went straight up the other end and would have won it but for the intervention of Cooney, who stood strong to deny Tudor Mendel and preserve our first league clean sheet of the season.
