Burnley U21s all-but secured progression to the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Luton Town on Friday night.
Following the end of their nine-match winning run earlier this week, the young Clarets bounced back in style with first-half goals from Tommy McDermott, Logan Pye, Tom Tweedy and Kamarni Ryan.
Brandon Ly netted the only goal of a quieter second half five minutes from time and Andy Farrell’s team have now won all four of their Group G matches to date.
There were four changes to the XI that started the Professional Development League match at Sheffield Wednesday, with Pye and Campbell stepping in at left and centre back respectively.
Charlie Veevers played the eight role, while Kamarni Ryan led the line.
McDermott was the first of the 22 players to work a shooting chance but pulled his effort wide of the right-hand post in the fifth minute.
The midfielder’s accuracy was better on his next attempt, as he picked out the bottom right corner for the opening goal after a Tweedy cross was cleared into his path.
McDermott was in the thick of the action, picking up a yellow card six minutes before setting up the team’s second goal.
His pinpoint pass was perfect for Pye to advance onto and finish into the bottom right corner for his first of the season.
That was the first of two goals in the space of three minutes, and it was a more familiar scorer in Tweedy who struck next.
The Welshman reacted sharply to adjust his body and finish on the half volley from 12 yards for his ninth of the campaign.
Burnley’s fourth came with five first-half minutes to play and it was Ryan who was on target, converting from close range after a fine set up from McDermott.
Both managers made two changes at the interval and Andy Farrell’s were planned, with Joe Ashton replacing Pye and Joe Westley taking the place of fellow scorer Tweedy.
It was the visitors who started the second half the strongest and Tate Xavier-Jones fired a presentable chance over the bar within 45 seconds of the restart.
The Hatters stabilised well and started to grow in confidence, with left winger Jack Lorentzen-Jones looking threatening on more than one occasion.
Farrell looked to his bench again just after the hour mark to try and combat that, and two changes saw Ly replace Joe Bauress and Lewis Richardson come on for Ryan.
Charlie Veevers was next to work Luton ‘keeper Liam Coyne and substitute Ly also tested the number one, but his effort was easy enough to claim.
Ly didn’t let that deter him, though, and rounded off the scoring in the 85th minute with a powerful finish into the bottom left corner following some neat trickery from João Mendes.
Alex Healy-Byrne was close to adding a sixth as the clock hit 90, but the right-back’s finish was wide after good work from Richardson.
Burnley now have 12 Premier League Cup points, six more than both Luton and Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Seagulls are Farrell’s team’s next opponents in the competition on Saturday 7th December, while the U21s’ next outing is the 2023/24 Lancashire FA Senior Cup final against Barrow on Tuesday.
