Burnley U21s were beaten 4-0 by a strong Charlton Athletic side at the Burnley Training Centre on Sunday afternoon.
The young Clarets started the game brighter than their visitors and there was only one goal in it at halftime, but Charlton stepped up a gear after the break to earn all three points.
Vernon Masara looked particularly sharp in the opening stages and had the first chance of the game, curling a shot narrowly wide after a mazy run forwards.
Andy Farrell’s side would come even closer soon after, as Benn Ward’s header struck a post from close range following a corner that was missed by the Charlton goalkeeper.
The hosts’ momentum was soon halted, though, as Charlton took a 23rd minute lead through Trialist A’s deflected shot from the edge of the area.
This knocked the stuffing out of the home side, with the rest of the first half being a scrappy affair.
Half-time was a chance for Burnley to re-group and Charlie Veevers came on for Joe Bauress in a pre-planned change as he continues to manage his minutes following a lengthy injury.
However, the Addicks added a second just two minutes after the restart through Micah Mbick, who finished expertly off a post.
Two more goals would follow soon after in a disappointing ten minutes that took the game away from Burnley.
Toby Bower first dispatched a penalty after Alex Healy-Byrne was adjudged to have fouled Harvey Kedwell, before Kai Enslin’s looping header made it 4-0.
There was a late flurry of Burnley chances, but some passionate Charlton defending kept them at bay with a series of last-ditch blocks.
Will Hugill, who made his senior debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this week, was also denied a consolation goal by an excellent close-range stop.
After four league games the Clarets are without a win and sit 8th in the Professional Development League North.
In contrast, their opponents have won all four of their outings and scored18 goals in the process.
Next up for Burnley is a trip to Bristol City’s Ashton Gate stadium on Tuesday 10th September.
