Burnley U21s recorded their first Professional Development League victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon, with Bradley Grant scoring twice in a 3-1 victory over Bristol City.
The winger was on target in both halves at Ashton Gate and an own goal secured the three points that the young Clarets’ performance deserved.
It was a much-changed team from the one that was beaten by Charlton Athletic last time out, with Jon Ander Vilar Robinson keeping goal for the first time this season.
Benn Ward wore the captain’s armband and Brandon Ly and Kamarni Ryan started in the attacking midfield and striking positions respectively.
Vilar Robinson produced the first real moment of note, flying to his left to stop a curling effort from the Robins’ Elijah Morrison.
That proved vital as Grant’s first goal of the season opened the scoring on 32 minutes, when the 19-year-old latched onto Ly’s cut back to fire into the top left corner.
It was 2-0 shortly after when a Joe Bauress delivery was headed into his own net by Rob Atkinson.
There was still time for more first-half action, with Vilar Robinson producing another strong stop to deny Billy Phillips before Grant fired over when one-on-one.
He wasn’t to be denied just after the hour, though, as he found himself perfectly placed to head in from six yards.
Manager Andy Farrell then started to shuffle his pack, with a trialist and Tom Tweedy replacing Alex Healy-Byrne and Bauress respectively.
Bristol City reduced their arrears with 17 minutes to play when Phillips was played through by Charlie Filer to finish low.
That didn’t affect Burnley’s mentality, though, with Benji Wetshi and João Mendes coming on to help see out an important result. The latter was making his Clarets debut.
Farrell’s side now sit 4th in the 11-team North section table with five points from five matches. Next up is a home game against Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday 17th September.
