Top of table clash for Clarets as Blades visit Leyland

2022-10-24T09:23:37.872Z

Burnley’s U21 side host Sheffield United at the County Ground in Leyland this afternoon, 24th October, in a top of the table Professional Development League clash (2pm KO).

The Blades and Clarets occupy 1st & 2nd in the Northern Section of the league respectively, with United five points ahead prior to the pair’s first meeting this campaign.

Burnley are unbeaten in all competitions since mid-August, and last time out won 3-1 away at Coventry City thanks to a clinical hat-trick from Dara Costelloe.

The Irish frontman twice converted from the penalty spot having opened the scoring with an inch-perfect two-touch finish in the early stages.

The result means the Clarets are ahead of 3rd-placed Hull City by four points, and extends their unbeaten run in the league to seven.

Today’s visitors United are also unbeaten in their last seven league outings, dropping only eight points so far this term with six of those from their two defeats to date against Charlton Athletic & Cardiff City.

Headed up by Michael Collins, the Blades haven’t been in action since 11th October when, as Burnley did last week, they claimed all three points on the road at Coventry.

And although today's meeting is a first in league action for a number of years, the two sides aren't strangers to one another having been paired up in last season's Premier League Cup group stage.

On both occasions in that competition last term, the away side ran out the victor with Burnley claiming a 3-0 success last October at the Technique Stadium in Chesterfield when both Ne-Jai Tucker & Michael Mellon were on target. The Blades though won the reverse fixture 1-0.
